Description

Green Tārā (Sanskrit: Bodhisattva Tārā), revered as the Holy Savior Tārā, Noble Lady, Majestic One, and Melodious Voice Goddess among 108 honorific epithets, manifests in Chinese mythology as the compassionate emanation of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva in Tibetan Buddhism. Originating from a tear of compassion shed by Avalokiteśvara, she stands as a paramount deity in Vajrayana tradition, venerated as the “Mother of All Buddhas” (Sarvabuddhamātā) and “Progenitor of Buddha Activities” (Buddhakarmamātā).
Iconographically, Green Tārā appears as a sixteen-year-old maiden, her luminous form radiating jade-like emerald purity. With one face and two arms, her semi-coiled hair cascades over shoulders beneath a five-Buddha crown adorned with a crescent-moon ornament. She wears celestial robes in rainbow hues—a layered skirt with inner long and outer short garments—and is solemnly bedecked with ritual jewels: a three-strand pearl necklace descending from collarbone to heart and navel, complemented by earrings, armlets, and anklets.
Her countenance embodies divine perfection: an oval face reminiscent of a sesame seed, arched brows framing lotus-petal-shaped eyes with crystalline clarity between jet-black pupils and white sclerae. Shell-like earlobes, a delicately curved smile, and a rounded chin complete her visage, symbolizing the union of transcendent wisdom and compassionate engagement.
