Description

Hayagrīva (Horse-Headed Vajra)
Known in Tibetan as Tamdrin (ཏ་མྲིན་, “Neighing Stallion”), Hayagrīva is a wrathful manifestation of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, embodying the power to subjugate demonic forces and obliterate obstacles for practitioners. Though his ferocious visage—marked by a rearing horse head roaring skyward—inspires awe, his fierce form arises solely from compassion, not hatred, to liberate beings trapped in delusion.
In esoteric Buddhism:
Mantrayana Identity:
One of the Six Forms of Avalokiteśvara (六观音), associated with liberating beings in the animal realm.
Considered the wrathful emanation of Amitāyus Buddha (无量寿佛) in certain traditions.
Central deity in the Avalokiteśvara Mandala of the Garbhadhatu (Womb Realm), crowned with a stallion’s head—hence the epithet Hayagrīva Avalokiteśvara.
Symbolic Significance:
As Horse-Headed Wisdom King (马头明王), he represents the Lotus Family among the Five Wisdom Kings, wielding the unstoppable force of a monarch’s steed to trample the “Four Māras” (death, defilements, aggregates, and devaputra). His neighing symbolizes virya (spiritual vigor) to traverse the ocean of saṃsāra and devour ignorance’s veils.
