Description

Black Jambhala (Tibetan: Zangla Nagpo; Sanskrit: Kubera), venerated in Tibetan Buddhism as Tsamblu Nakpo, is an emanation of Vajrasattva, the Immutable Buddha of the Eastern Realm, and one of the Five Families of Wealth Deities. Originating from the ancient Indian deity of wealth, Kubera (Sanskrit: Kubera), he was emanated to liberate sentient beings in the Sahā World from the sufferings of poverty. In Vajrayana tradition, Black Jambhala is revered as the most potent among the Five Jambhalas for granting immediate material abundance, earning him the epithet King of Wealth Deities.
As a compassionate manifestation of Vajrasattva’s resolve to eradicate worldly destitution, his body radiates a deep azure-black hue, symbolizing the indestructible power to dispel all obstructive conditions and ensure the flawless fulfillment of virtuous aspirations. Iconographically, he is depicted with a stout, prosperous physique—naked, with crimson hair, jet-black skin, and three wrathful eyes blazing. His fiery beard and eyebrows frame a face crowned with a jeweled diadem adorned with eight nāgas, while his erect phallus signifies the unceasing flow of blessings.
In his right hand, he holds a skull cup brimming with the nectar of wisdom at his heart; his left hand grasps a treasure-emitting mongoose (nakula). Standing in a dynamic posture—right leg bent, left leg extended—he tramples upon the golden-bodied Wealth Guardian Deity, symbolizing mastery over greed and attachment. Seated upon a lotus-and-moon disc throne, his presence embodies the transformation of mundane desires into enlightened abundance.
