Mahakala of the Black Cloak (Hei Pao Mahakala), revered as the Black-Cloaked Vajra Dharma Protector, is the exclusive guardian deity of the successive Karmapas of the Karma Kagyu lineage, sworn to uphold the Karmapa’s mission to propagate the Buddhist Dharma. This wrathful manifestation is depicted with a single face, two arms, and three blood-red eyes blazing with ferocity. His stout, blue-black physique symbolizes unwavering subjugation of obstacles. Flames of crimson hair surge upward, crowned by a diadem of five skulls adorned with a vajra and serpent motif. Four fangs protrude menacingly from his snarling mouth, his lolling tongue coiled in a fearsome grimace.
In his right hand, he brandishes a hooked knife aloft in the sky, severing delusions; his left hand cradles a skull cup brimming with the nectar of wisdom. Clad in a black Tibetan robe, his form is embellished with bone ornaments and serpentine coils, signifying mastery over life, death, and primordial energies. His right leg bends while the left extends, trampling upon the corpse of egoic ignorance, embodying the triumph of enlightened activity over samsaric bondage.
