Description
Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva A Mahayana Buddhist bodhisattva renowned for his profound vows, Ksitigarbha (地藏, “Earth Treasury”) derives his name from the Sutra of the Ten Wheels:”Steadfast as the earth, Profoundly contemplative as hidden treasures.” Also venerated as Ksitigarbha King Bodhisattva (地藏王菩萨), he is entrusted by Śākyamuni Buddha to guide all beings during the cosmic interim between Śākyamuni’s parinirvana and the advent of Maitreya Buddha. Scriptures recount his oath: “Until the hells are emptied, I vow not to attain Buddhahood.” His legend as the “Bodhisattva of Great Filial Piety” stems from past-life accounts where he repeatedly rescued his mother from hellish torment. Through eons, he has pledged to liberate all suffering beings, particularly those in the underworld, embodying dual virtues of “Great Filial Devotion” (大孝) and “Boundless Vows” (大愿). In esoteric Buddhism: Mantrayana Title: Vajra of Compassionate Vows (悲愿金刚) or Vajra of Benevolent Aspiration (与愿金刚) Vajradhatu Manifestation: Banner-Holding Bodhisattva attending Ratnasambhava Buddha (Southern Buddha of Abundance) Garbhadhatu Role: Central deity among nine sacred forms in the Ksitigarbha Mandala |
