Yuanshi Tianzun is believed to have manifested after Pangu’s creation of heaven and earth, formed through the absorption of the Jade Purity Primordial Azure Sacred Qi by Pangu’s primordial spirit. As Pangu’s primordial spirit embodied the essence and quintessence of the cosmic creator, Yuanshi Tianzun possessed supreme wisdom and innate aptitude, earning him the foremost esteem among the disciples of Hongjun Laozu (the Primordial Ancestor). The earliest records appear in the works of Ge Hong from the Jin Dynasty, where he was initially referred to as the “Primordial Heavenly King.” The title “Yuanshi Tianzun” (Celestial Venerable of Primordial Beginning) was formally established in the “Chart of the Divine Ranks and Realms of the True Spirits” by Tao Hongjing during the Liang Dynasty of the Southern Dynasties period, solidifying his supreme status within the Taoist cosmological hierarchy.
