| Palden Lhamo (吉祥天母) Known in Tibetan as Dpal ldan lha mo (班达拉姆), Palden Lhamo is the foremost female Dharma protector in Tibetan Buddhism, revered across all schools. She safeguards not only the teachings of Śākyamuni Buddha but has served as a protector of Buddhist Dharma since the time of Kāśyapa Buddha (迦叶佛). With “a hundred epithets and a thousand names”, many revered tantric deities, including wisdom consorts (vidyādevī), are considered her emanations. Origin and Evolution: Vedic Roots: Emerging from Hindu mythology, she was born during the Churning of the Ocean of Milk (乳海搅动), a cosmic event between gods (devas) and anti-gods (asuras). Hindu Transformation: Brahmanism and Hinduism reimagined her as Śrīdevī (功德天女, “Goddess of Merit”), consort of Vishnu and sister of wealth god Kubera (毗沙门). She governed fate and prosperity.
