Description

Sitātapatrā (Great White Umbrella Deity)
Sitātapatrā, known in Tibetan as Dukar (杜甘姆) and in Zhangzhung language as Buzha Akan (布扎阿甘), is a manifestation of all Buddhas’ enlightened activities. This deity appears in multiple forms, including thousand-armed, ten-armed, six-armed, and two-armed embodiments. As a Vajrayana deity unifying exoteric and esoteric traditions, she is venerated as the Mother of the Three Times’ Buddhas, a wrathful protector who reverses adversities and subdues malevolent forces. The Sitātapatra Sūtra, encapsulating the essence of all mantras, extols her supreme power.
Iconography:
Form: Female deity with a white body, three primary heads crowned by smaller heads, and countless arms—each bearing an eye and wielding ritual implements (hooks, swords, bows, lotuses, vajras).
Primary Symbol: A white parasol (sitatapatra) held in her main left hand, representing universal protection.
Aureole: Encircled by flames symbolizing transformative wisdom.
Base: Tramples beings underfoot, illustrating her sheltering embrace over all sentient life.
Sacred Functions:
Protection: Her parasol shields devotees from spiritual and worldly harm.
Purification: Radiates luminous compassion that purifies defilements, as described in the Sitātapatra Sūtra.
Enlightened Authority: Subjugates demonic forces through her vajra-like resolve.
