Description

The Sacred Protector Gur Kyi Gonpo (宝帐怙主)
The lineage of the Protector of the Sacred Tent (Gonpo Gur) in Tibet traces to the era of Sachen Kunga Nyingpo (1092–1158), founding patriarch of the Sakya tradition. During his studies under the renowned Translator Bari Lotsawa (巴日译师) — a master of post-renovation exoteric and esoteric teachings — Sachen received profound transmissions of the Mahakala (玛哈嘎拉) practice. Bari bestowed upon him:
Liturgical texts for enlightened activity (karma sādhanā)
A mobile black mask of the Protector, sanctified through the “Three Gates” (body, speech, mind)
A blood-inscribed root mantra scripted in Bari’s own vital essence
In a pivotal ritual act, the aged Bari addressed the consecrated Mahakala statue:
“My years decline; henceforth, follow this scion of Sakya’s Khön lineage.”
Thus, the sacred icon and mask were transferred to Sachen Kunga Nyingpo, establishing Gonpo Gur as the guardian deity of Sakya Monastery’s Protector Chapel. The original black mask remains enshrined there today, with these events meticulously recorded in the Annals of the Sakya Tradition (萨迦史记).
