Description
Goddess Zhaxi Lhamo Venerated as Tibet’s Female Deity of Wealth, Zhaxi Lhamo’s legend traces to her past life as a beloved imperial concubine. Poisoned in palace intrigues, her spirit wandered the mortal realm, refusing to depart. To liberate her soul, the emperor summoned eminent lamas from Lhasa. Guided by these masters, her spirit journeyed to Tibet. Yet bound by tradition forbidding women’s entry into monasteries, she founded Zhaxi Temple in the Zhaxi region. Today, her iconography depicts a jet-black visage with a wrathful glare and a protruding elongated tongue—a manifestation of venom expelled during her poisoning, symbolizing unyielding authority. Legends claim Zhaxi Lhamo originated from China’s heartland, granting her temple unique cultural syncretism that draws Han Chinese devotees. Initially consecrated for peace blessings, the temple gained renown as a wealth sanctuary after merchants testified to miraculous efficacy in commerce post-worship. As a Worldly Dharma Protector (lokapāla), Zhaxi Lhamo remains tethered to samsara, accumulating merit through mortal interactions. Her unresolved karmic bonds enable her to manifest in human form, rendering her blessings exceptionally potent. Revered as a fierce wealth deity, her “violent” methods of bestowing prosperity—swift yet uncompromising—command deep devotion among followers. |
