Description
One of the Twenty-Four Deva Guardians in Buddhist cosmology. In Buddhist tradition, this deity manifests as an embodiment of Vairocana Buddha, possessing the supreme supernatural power of invisibility and omnipresence. Originating as the boar-headed Hindu goddess of light, she was assimilated into Tibetan Buddhism and transformed into a distinctive three-faced and eight-armed form, bearing dual divine responsibilities of obstacle-removal and bliss-bestowal. Revered as the protective deity of invisibility and calamity-dispelling, this formidable power commands the Thirty-Six Heavenly Champions above and governs the Seventy-Two Earthly Warriors below. Additionally, it holds dominion over all Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions. Endowed with perfect mastery of concealment and omnipresence, it rescues sentient beings from perilous situations and dire sufferings. In temple iconography, the deity appears as a celestial maiden holding a lotus flower, crowned with a pagoda, seated upon a golden boar surrounded by a retinue of porcine attendants. Known in Daoist tradition as Doumu Yuanjun (Mother of the Great Chariot), this primordial goddess of Taoism is revered as the mother of nine stellar sovereigns: her first two sons being the Great Emperor of Polaris (Gouchen) and the Purple Tenuity Emperor (Ziwei) among the Four Celestial Sovereigns, while her remaining seven offspring constitute the Seven Star Lords of the Northern Dipper. Each of these seven stars governs the birth destinies of all mortals. |
